She had to glance up to see his face, and said nothing.

“We have to get away from this…” What had the psycho called his gang? Oh, yeah. “Pack.”

Tory’s eyes got wider, he saw that. “You know about them?” she asked disbelievingly.

“I think that you believe they killed your brother, and that they probably did.”

Tory looked stricken now. Her voice shook. “They killed him. And you said ‘pack.’”

“That’s what Chavez called his gang.”

“It is a pack. A lethal pack of animals. As long as they’re here, people are in danger. Yet no one can know about them, really. No one would believe it.”

Adam nodded in an attempt to calm her rising anxiety. The atmosphere around them, between them, seemed to change the more anxious Tory became. The normal act of breathing was growing more difficult.

“No one will believe what?” he asked her. “What do you know?”

A strangled sound emerged from this lovely woman’s throat, a harsh whisper that sounded more like a cry. “What do you think the word ‘pack’ means? They’re not human and won’t behave like humans. They’re wolves, Adam. Werewolves.”

Adam knew she waited for his response to that statement, but he just couldn’t come up with anything suitable.
